Conn. Couple Charged With Depriving Children of Food
Connecticut couple was arrested and charged Wednesday for depriving their two daughters of food, authorities said.
According to police, the children’s mother Christine Berkery, 32, and her new husband John Berkery, 35, were arraigned in New London Superior Court on charges of cruelty to persons and risk of injury to minors.
The couple is accused of locking up the family’s food and designating strict time periods for the children to eat. The victims are 14 and 1, police said.
Christine and John Berkery also neglected the infant officials said, frequently leaving her unattended in her crib with an overflowing diaper.
Authorities launched an investigation in August 2009, when the children’s aunt notified police after noticing how malnourished the 1-year-old girl appeared. The aunt later obtained custody of the 14-year-old girl.
When officers showed up at the home last year, they discovered the baby with a dirty diaper, drinking a moldy substance, an arrest warrant said.
Christine and John Berkery are being held in lieu of $150,000 bond and are due back in court on Jan. 14. The two maintain their innocence
