Lesbian bishop ordained in the US
The Episcopal Church in the US has ordained its first openly lesbian bishop.
A ceremony was held for Mary Douglas Glasspool in the church’s Los Angeles diocese.
The move is likely to stoke further tension within the US arm of the Anglican church. Fierce debate still rages over the 2003 ordination of its first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson.
One parishioner said: “The Episcopal Church is making a stand for righteousness and goodness. And I really really believe that it’s helping us and the world to understand that everyone has the right to be who they wish to be in anyway that god has made them.”
But a man protesting outside the ceremony said: “Homosexuality is a sin. Not the person. But the sin of homosexuality. He (God) loves the person, but he just wants them to go (and) sin no more.”
