WTOP: Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman has resigned

Radio station WTOP 103.5FM serving the Washington, DC-Maryland Area is reporting that Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman has resigned.

Nationals Manager Jim Riggleman has resigned, GM Mike Rizzo announced Thursday after the Nationals’ 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The resignation comes after Riggleman asked the team to pick up his contract’s option for next season. The Nationals did not do so, so Riggleman quit after the Nats win Thursday.

The team will name an interim manager Friday before the Nationals face the White Sox. Rizzo said Riggleman told him he would not travel with the team to Chicago.

The Nats have won 11 of their past 12, and 16 of their past 21 games. The team is now one game over .500 (38-37), their best mark this late in the season since 2005, the team’s first season in D.C.

Riggleman is the second manager to resign this week. Florida Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez quit Sunday.
